The presentation addresses some of the aspects related to managing the ageing of structures, systems and components (SSCs) from the initial commissioning phase through subsequent long-term operation (LTO) periods. Effective ageing management of SSCs requires the use of a systematic approach to managing the effects of ageing to ensure that SSCs are able to accomplish their required safety functions throughout the lifetime of the nuclear power plant (NPP).
To ensure this goal the operating organisation should already during the commissioning phase establish an ageing management programme for measuring and recording baseline data relevant to all in-scope SSCs. During the commissioning operating organization should also ensure that SSCs are not subjected to unnecessary stresses that are not accounted for in the design or that could cause premature ageing due to the improper execution of testing.
During the original design lifetime, regular lifecycle assessments, upgrades aligned with technological advancements, and compliance with evolving standards and regulatory requirements become integral part of plants ageing management programme.
For the majority of the operating NPPs, the original design life was 30-40 years. Currently many of those plants are already operating beyond that time frame and some of them have already applied license for the second LTO period. The LTO periods may pose a number of safety related challenges that need to be addressed to ensure safe and reliable operation of NPPs. The scope and depth of the safety assessment vary, depending on national requirements. In many instances, the process used is the periodic safety review which is typically performed every 10 years. New and on-going research for LTO is also needed to ensure the technical basis for LTO to support licensing actions related to subsequent license renewals and plant life extensions.
Why motivated to participate:
My motivation to participate NIC2024 offers opportunity to obtain information about the cutting-edge solutions and best practices used in nuclear power industry to implement effective ageing management of structures, systems and components. This event creates also a platform for industry experts to exchange ideas and introduces the latest advancements, emerging trends as well as challenges related to ageing management and long-term operation strategies.
